Royale Federale (Cape Town, South Africa)

R70 (approx £5.80). Chorizo, chilli, coriander and guacamole in a beef burger? Yeah, that's right. And guess what? It really works!

Don't let this iPhone snap fool you, the Federale burger at Royale in Cape Town is well worth sampling. Why? Well, the patty blends freshly minced beef with chorizo, chilli and coriander - and it's served with a super delicious home made guacamole...

Listed in the Something A Little Different section of Royale's menu (which sports a hardback clothbound cover complete with gold logo, nice), the Federale burger came highly recommended by our waitress so I decided to give it a go. Normally, I'm a bit of a purist, but on my first visit to Royale last year I had a burger that combined a whole load of flavours I wouldn't have considered combining but was amazed by how good it was.

Although the topmost image perhaps suggests that the Federale is all bun and not much burger, the Royale seeded sesame buns are really great. They're light and soft and squash down to almost nothing and have just a hint of sweetness. The patty itself was perfectly cooked, juicy and super tasty. The combination of flavours was really, really good. I took just one more photo:

The reason for this lack of documentation is simply because I couldn't put the Federale down until I'd demolished it. Very special indeed and I doff my hat to the genius that created it.

As well as the homemade guacamole, a leaf of lettuce, some caramelised onions, pickles and a splat of garlic aioli make up the ensemble. I wil definitely be attempting to recreate this awesome burger at a barbeque very, very soon. Possibly tomorrow! If you're in Cape Town, you MUST spend some time at Royale.
