A month ago I was in sunny Cape Town for the brilliant Design Indaba conference. The very lovely folk at the Royale Eatery not only provided the perfect venue to host a South African Burgermat Show, but suggested we combine forces to create a special burger for the occasion: The Burgerac burger...
On the evening of Friday 2nd March, Burgermats were placed on tables, to be used as placemats but available for people to take away as a keepsake after they'd eaten...
And Royale's beautiful resident burger alchemist, Jenga, created the Burgerac burger (above, and below) with only a vague idea from me a few weeks beforehand that it should include a chipotle mayo. Jenga TOTALLY NAILED a smokey burger sauce and added some touches of her own, including a killer onion compote. Some tangy cheddar and an iceberg slaw made up the ensemble, all housed in Royale's excellent seeded bun. Good times!
There was even a suggestion that the Burgerac burger might make it on to the permanent menu at Royale. I'm not sure how that's working out, but needless to say, I'll be the proudest burger blogger in the whole world if mine and Jenga's collaborative burger got on Royale's awesome menu!
Massive thank you to all the artists involved for being cool with me taking the show to Cape Town, even though I didn't sell anything, just gave Burgermats away.
Huge Burgerac shout out to Hugo, Mama, Jenga, Simone, Angie and Dina and ALL at Royale in Cape Town - thank you so much for making the Burgermat Show an international affair so awesomely. Massive props also to Karen, Kyana, Nadine, Chris, Andrea, Laduma and Aaron for being there with me. Big Burgerac love, yo!
Post script: I've just heard from Royale: "It's definitely going on the permanent menu. So damn good! Thanks again for bringing the show to Royale!" WHOOP!!!
